Gender-based stereotypes are ideas and misconceptions that impede talented young women from achieving their infinite potential. At the MAIA Impact School, Girl Pioneers are supported to create their path to success by using their empowered voice and pursuing dreams that are not manipulated by society.
Girl Pioneers want to raise awareness around gender biases and barriers and enlighten the path for many more girls in Guatemala and beyond to challenge gender-based stereotypes. And so they did. Elizabeth, Jessica, Kimberly and Roselia, wrote a play demonstrating the importance of believing in oneself and not letting life’s challenges, judgments of others, or stereotypes prevent them from achieving their dreams.
Kaleb – A past that makes you reborn features two main female characters: Kaleb, guarding over Loly, a young girl with the dream of going to school and building a better life for herself.
Girl Pioneers submitted the play to the category of Arts of the first national CIMAT (STEAM in Spanish) conference, an event in Guatemala that seeks to recognize and reward students from 8th to 11th grade who present innovative and impactful projects across the STEAM disciplines, to serve as inspiration to all youth in the country.
Theatre is a transformational tool, and Girl Pioneers have applied their skills and creativity to write and perform a play that seeks justice for all girls across Guatemala.
Girl Pioneers created the character of Loly, a girl who grows up without a childhood, whose family does not provide the emotional support needed to succeed in a stable environment, and who suffers physical abuse in an orphanage eventually driving her to the streets.
MAIA Girl Pioneers know that too often, this is the reality that many girls in Guatemala face every day and send a strong message of hope by showing through Loly that resilience, strength, and belief in herself are the keys to set a new bold trajectory to success.
This work’s power and infinite impact were rewarded with the first prize in the category of Arts of the CIMAT 2021 fair.
With an empowered voice, Girl Pioneers are telling the world that they are not the problem, they are the solution!
The initial group of Girl Pioneers who created this theatrical work of art hope to one day turn the play into a feature length film with a custom soundtrack. They have invited their classmates to join them on this journey.
