5 Actions By and For Indigenous Women

Ensuring Access to Our Rights and Transforming Our Future

Every March 8, International Women’s Day invites us to reflect on our rights—but it is also a powerful call to action. For us at MAIA, talking about rights means talking about real opportunities, informed choices, and building a community rooted in equity.

Indigenous women not only face historical gaps; we also hold knowledge, leadership, and resilience that drive transformation. However, guaranteeing our rights requires creating the conditions that allow us to fully exercise them.

Through our work at MAIA, these are five concrete actions by and for Indigenous women that strengthen our present and project a more equitable future:

1. Quality Education

For us, education is much more than being in a classroom. It is about developing critical thinking, strengthening identity, and expanding possibilities.

When education connects with the realities of the Girl Pioneers and our communities, it becomes a powerful tool for deep transformation. This is especially urgent in Guatemala, where only 2 out of every 10 Indigenous women graduate from highschool. Structural barriers continue to limit dreams and opportunities.

Investing in quality education means ensuring that each Girl Pioneer can break through historical barriers that have imposed limiting roles, strengthen her identity, and gain the tools needed to build the future she envisions for herself—from creating a family on her own terms to achieving financial independence.

2. Strengthening Local Leadership

Local leadership is not small; it is the foundation of sustainable transformation. When an Indigenous woman leads in her community, she inspires others, creating a multiplying effect of change.

Our team—87% of whom are women—share educational practices, experiences, and cultural identity in national and international spaces, exchanging knowledge with other organizations and contributing to broader conversations on education and equity.

3. Empowering Our Voices

Historically, others have spoken for us. Today, we affirm something different: our voices matter and they carry power.

Empowering our voices means creating safe spaces to express ourselves, question, propose, and participate in decisions that affect our lives. It means strengthening self-confidence, honoring our history, and valuing our languages, cultures, and knowledge.

4. Caring for Our Physical and Socioemotional Health

We cannot talk about rights without talking about well-being. At MAIA, we provide an onsite nurse and clinic and organize preventative health fairs—including dentistry, ophthalmology, and vaccinations, among others—for the Girl Pioneers and their families. We also facilitate spaces for mentorship and socioemotional support.

Proper nutrition is also an essential part of this process. Every Girl Pioneer receives a daily nutritious snack and lunch, providing the energy needed to fully engage in her academic journey.

These concrete actions make holistic development possible.

5. Transforming Our Environment

Transformation doesn’t happen in isolation. Close mentorship and guidance for each Girl Pioneer and her family strengthens support networks and builds safer, more equitable environments.

At MAIA, we also invest in the academic preparation and ongoing professional growth of our team. We believe that when women are in continuous learning and professional development, the impact of our work expands. As our team grows stronger, so does the inspiration it brings to the Girl Pioneers and to more women across our communities.

This March 8, we remember that rights become real when opportunities, community, and leadership exist. On March 6, our staff and Girl Pioneers came together for cultural activities and a march through downtown Sololá to raise awareness and create meaningful impact in our community. These moments remind us that actions by and for Indigenous women are not symbolic gestures; they are sustained commitments that open pathways for new generations. In the play "Kajulew: Tierra y Territorio" by the group Mujeres Ajchowen, two women share stories of inequality and injustice, confronting them with courage, resilience and unity.

Girl Pioneers took the stage to showcase their talents in singing, poetry, and dance—sharing messages of empowerment and motivation.

The actions we share today are part of an ongoing commitment to the rights and future of Indigenous women. For this work to remain sustainable, we need allies.

Alianza is our recurring giving program, it provides consistent and predictable funding that allows us to plan long-term initiatives and expand our impact. Joining means choosing to be part of a collective effort that believes in real opportunities and lasting change for Girl Pioneers and their communities.

How mathematics, logic, technology and science open new possibilities for Girl Pioneers

At MAIA, we believe learning goes beyond acquiring knowledge—it’s about developing the ability to analyze, question, and make informed decisions—which is why we intentionally prioritize logical and critical thinking as a foundation for life. Mathematics, technology, logic, and science are not just subjects taught in the classroom; they are tools that allow Girl Pioneers to understand their surroundings, face challenges, and build solutions with purpose and meaning.

As Celestina Poz, Co-Director of the MAIA Impact School, explains: “At MAIA, we intentionally prioritize mathematics, logic, and science because they are fundamental pillars for holistic development. They strengthen critical thinking through problem solving connected to the students’ own contexts, with a level of rigor that invites them to analyze, question, and explore different strategies, allowing them to build their own processes to reach well-founded solutions.”

Transforming the learning experience

Within Guatemala’s educational context, many girls begin secondary school with significant gaps in mathematics and science. This reality does not define their potential, but it does shape the challenges they must overcome to continue their educational journey with confidence.

According to Sofía Cuc, a mathematics educator, in a recent BBC news report: “Some students enter the MAIA Impact School at 12 or 13 years old without the expected ability to add, subtract, or multiply.”

In this matter, Celestina Poz adds: “In Guatemala, there are significant gaps in mathematics and science within public education, the result of an educational system that does not always guarantee the development of the skills, competencies, and knowledge needed to begin lower secondary school. Aware of this reality, we created the Impulso program, designed to intentionally strengthen the academic foundations that Girl Pioneers need for their educational trajectory.”

Throughout their time at the MAIA Impact School, transformation goes beyond academic results. The way students see themselves also changes—strengthening their empowerment and their ability to solve problems in their daily lives, which in turn transforms dynamics within their families and, eventually, their communities.

From the classroom, this process is clear. Yulisa Julajuj, natural sciences and chemistry educator, shares: “As Girl Pioneers grow academically, I see how confidence transforms the way they learn. They participate more confidently, actively engage in problem solving, and understand mistakes as part of the scientific process.”

Results that reflect new opportunities

Our commitment to a strong, contextualized STEM -Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics- approach is reflected in concrete results. In 2025, MAIA’s Girl Pioneers scored 60 percentage points above the national average in mathematics, demonstrating what is possible when students receive consistent support, high expectations, and meaningful learning opportunities.

This impact extends beyond secondary school. In 2026, 65% of MAIA graduates are now pursuing university degrees related to science, including engineering, architecture, medicine, nursing, accounting, and business administration. These outcomes reflect educational pathways that continue to open and informed decisions that expand professional horizons.

Transformation also becomes visible when students participate and excel in broader academic spaces. In 2025, three Girl Pioneers from MAIA were winners in different national competitions in mathematics and science, including STEM-related competitions.

Reflecting on these achievements, Yulisa notes: “The main challenge is sustaining motivation, strengthening confidence, and overcoming contextual barriers. However, experiences like Alexandra’s in Guatemala’s National Science Olympiads or thewinners at CIMAT (STEAM competition) show that when students are given opportunities and proper guidance, they can reach high levels of scientific performance.”

Science, equity, and the future

At MAIA, we are convinced that transformation begins with a quality education that recognizes each student’s potential and creates the conditions for it to fully develop. Investing in science is investing in equity, autonomy, and futures in which young women actively participate in the creation of knowledge.

As Celestina affirms: “It is important for girls and women to be involved in science because we have the capacity, talent, and diversity of perspectives needed to innovate, create change, and contribute decisively to scientific and social development.”

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the Girl Pioneers who question, explore, and transform. Their journey reminds us that when science is accessible and meaningful, it can truly become a powerful engine for transformation.

Education that drives change

We are a force for change rooted in quality education

When we talk about education, we are not only talking about methods, content, or tests. We are talking about people, about educators who lead diverse classrooms filled with talent and dreams every day. We are also talking about communities that know education can open the door to greater opportunities.

At MAIA, educating means accompanying learning processes with intention, clarity, and purpose. We believe transformative education begins when every learning experience has meaning, direction, and a deep connection to the lives of those who learn.

As Celena Cuy, Administrative Co-Director of The MAIA Impact School, explains: “A class at MAIA has a clear and purposeful objective, and educators follow a defined instructional pathway that allows them to know exactly which topics Girl Pioneers need to learn and master.”

This pedagogical leadership—from planning to implementation and conceptual understanding—is what makes it possible to develop real skills and competencies in each Girl Pioneer.

A Day of Classes at The MAIA Impact School

A day at the Impact School begins at 8:00am and ends at 3:40pm. The school day is organized into five subjects, a mid-morning break, and lunchtime. Girl Pioneers move from classroom to classroom, and in each space, they are welcomed warmly, reinforcing a sense of belonging.

Each class begins by recognizing prior knowledge—building on the ideas Girl Pioneers already bring with them—and encouraging the use of an empowered voice. Collaborative work is central, not only as a teaching strategy, but as a way to strengthen collective learning and shared responsibility.

As Vilma Saloj, Director of Strategic Partnerships, describes: “The Girl Pioneer is the protagonist of her own learning.” Educators serve as guides, orienting the process and facilitating access to knowledge, while Girl Pioneers actively construct their own learning.

In every class, three levels of thinking are intentionally developed: literal—understanding what is explicit; inferential—deducing what is implicit by connecting prior knowledge; and critical—evaluating, judging, and forming well-founded opinions.

This journey is supported by methodologies that optimize time, promote deep understanding, and strengthen knowledge retention through games, dynamics, and integrative activities.

Sustainability and Replicability

Our experience at The MAIA Impact School demonstrates that a different kind of education is possible when Girl Pioneers are at the center. “Our teaching is not based exclusively on content, but on a holistic vision of academic, personal, and social impact, with intentional and consistent practices that place the Girl Pioneer at the center of her learning,” Celena Cuy explains.

The outcomes we see with Girl Pioneers reflect a model with strong potential to be sustained over time. The strategies with the greatest impact are those deeply connected to local context: using everyday commercial situations to teach mathematics or integrating students’ mother tongues into literacy activities. These practices remind us that education becomes more meaningful when it is rooted in daily life.

Scaling Our Impact

At MAIA, we understand that transforming education also means strengthening those who teach. “MAIA has an internal educator training strategy made up of a diverse set of professional development opportunities; this ensures higher-quality outcomes in the classroom,” shares Andrea Coché, CEO of MAIA.

From this conviction, we desire to share what we learn. As Andrea reflects: “What would happen if we brought together our best practices with those of other organizations also working to improve educational quality?”

This question also responds to needs identified within the public education system. In the words of Víctor Chumil, Educational Supervisor in Sololá: “Within the Ministry of Education, we have significant weaknesses in mathematics and communication and language. We are seeking to raise learning levels, which is why we reached out to civil society organizations that can help us achieve this goal.”

In 2024, we co-founded the Voces para la Educación network, working alongside nine organizations: Glasswing International, Child Aid, Puerta Abierta, School the World, Tierra Nueva, Limitless Horizons, Population Council, COED, ADGN Education, and local education authorities, to reimagine teacher training in Sololá. In 2025 together, we trained nearly 100 educators from 25 communities in literacy, mathematics, and classroom management, with the support of 25 facilitators from partner organizations.

When our practices are shared and placed at the service of the collective, education moves beyond the transmission of knowledge and becomes a force capable of transforming realities.

Reflecting on 2025: What Collective Change Made Possible

As 2025 comes to a close, we pause to reflect on the year behind us—the conversations that shaped us, the lessons learned, and the collective belief that moved our work forward. This season invites gratitude, but also perspective: a moment to recognise what becomes possible when we choose to build change together.

For us at MAIA, this year was marked by growth, leadership, and a shared commitment. Led by the Girl Pioneers, communities, and staff members. As well as our partners, allies and donors. From our classrooms to meeting rooms, from local action to global conversations, each step forward reflected the power of Indigenous women leading their futures.

What follows is a reflection of that shared commitment—a collection of moments that, together, tell the story of how our collective force change took shape this year. We invite you to celebrate these moments with us:

Our Strategic Plan 2025-2029

This year we launched our 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, a roadmap grounded in evidence, reflection, and our unwavering belief in the transformative power of women.

At MAIA, we maximize and amplify the transformative power of women to create a society with equity and opportunity. Our new strategic plan serves as our working theory of action, outlining how we will intentionally invest our resources, energy, and learning to move boldly toward our mission and vision over the next five years.

Our Voices Reaching the world

This year, the stories of Girl Pioneers, their families, staff and our organization travelled far beyond Guatemala. Through features in different media outlets, our voices reached Germany, Australia, Scotland, the USA, Guatemala and more. Sharing a powerful narrative of transformation rooted in education, community, and Indigenous women’s leadership.

These stories highlighted the journeys of Girl Pioneers, their families, and our staff, showcasing how education can break the cycles of poverty and inequity.

Together, we are generating systemic change

This work reflects our belief that systemic change is built collaboratively, alongside educators, mentors and strategic partners. Through these alliances, we strengthen systems by sharing knowledge, fostering trust, and committing to long-term partnerships.

Voces por la Educación

We worked with nine organizations and local education authorities to reimagine teacher training in Sololá, through an initiative we co-founded. Together, we trained 100 teachers from 25 communities in literacy, mathematics, and classroom management—supported by 25 facilitators across partner organizations.

As part of our partnership with Girls Not Brides, the voices of Girl Pioneers were featured in the “Dear Future Me” campaign. Through their letters, they shared their experiences, resilience, and the futures they are committed to shaping.

Adekam

In collaboration with ADEKAM and Guatemala’s Ministry of Health, we continue to expand the non-academic learning spaces that support Girl Pioneers beyond the classroom. These workshops focused on recognizing violence, building healthy relationships, menstrual hygiene, and sexual and reproductive rights.

Plataforma Iximulew Guatemala

During the annual assembly of Plataforma Iximulew–Guatemala and Red Ajkat Iximulew from TDH, Guadalupe Natareno, Communications and Fundraising Manager, along with Antonia and Wendy, MAIA graduates, were elected as delegates. Their leadership reflects our commitment to collective action and Indigenous women leading change across education, gender justice, and youth advocacy spaces.

Our First Alumni Network Summit

On August 10th, we celebrated a milestone: the first-ever alumni summit. Where more than 50 graduates from across generations came together to strengthen leadership, identity, and belonging beyond MAIA’s classrooms. It was a space of reflection, dialogue, inspiration, and joy, and its impact continues to grow through the lifelong connections formed there.

Indigenous women’s leadership

This year, Girl Pioneers and staff members demonstrated what becomes possible when curiosity meets opportunity.

Alexandra, an eighth-grader, earned third place in Guatemala’s National Science Olympiad, presenting an innovative experiment that combined wind energy, origami, mechanics, and recycled materials. Her achievement reflects not only her brilliance but the guidance of dedicated educators like Yulissa Julajuj, MAIA’s science teacher.

At the Science, Maths, Techonoly fair (Feria CIMAT), two 9th-grade Girl Pioneers earned first place in the Mathematics category, reaffirming the leadership and excellence that flourish when Indigenous girls believe in their potential.

Three Girl Pioneers graduates, Linda, Saudi and Jessica, were selected this year by the Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Foundation, a Guatemalan foundation that awards university scholarships to students with outstanding academic performance. This recognition highlights their dedication, excellence, and the pathways they are building toward higher education and leadership. The three of them will continue studying at university.

Ixchely Saloj, English Teacher, was selected to participate in the 30th AFS Youth Assembly, one of the world’s most prestigious gatherings of young leaders. At the Action and Impact Hub, she shared her lived experience with peers from around the globe, connecting local change to global movements. Her participation reflected what we see every day at MAIA: Indigenous women are not only shaping their own futures—they are shaping conversations worldwide!

A celebration of courage, dreams, and change

Here’s to the 5th class of graduate Girl Pioneers

We believe in the power of saying “Yes.”

In a country where Indigenous girls often hear countless “no”. No to education, no to opportunity, no to dreaming big. But today, we are celebrating a resounding “Yes!” that comes from leadership, from courage, and from the dreams that drive transformation.

Today, we can’t wait to introduce you to the 5th class of graduates. Each one of them represents what happens when possibility meets determination, when a “Yes” opens doors to new futures.

“Being a Girl Pioneer changed my life. My grandmother and my mother had their first child at 18. I am 18 now, and I’m breaking that cycle—my dreams are big. I will begin my university studies next year, and I hope to join community groups where I can use my voice in shaping decisions.”

At MAIA, we know that inequity in Guatemala is inherited. The path for Indigenous women and girls is often shaped by systemic barriers: poverty, limited access to education, and early motherhood. But together, we are rewriting this story.

As we celebrate this milestone for the newest graduating class, we are reminded that our mission is more than education. It’s about empowering girls to become leaders, shaping communities, and proving that with support, guidance, and opportunity, change is possible.

“At MAIA, I learned how to use the power of my voice. Now I am an inspiration for my entire family, especially my younger siblings, because they ask me to teach them the things I’ve learned. Carrying that responsibility is meaningful, and it fills me with pride. I want to keep studying and grow into a leader who expands and strengthens educational opportunities for the next generation of Indigenous leaders.”

Just like Ana and Dulce, there are 40 more dreams, goals, and hopes for transformation being nurtured every day. Each graduating Girl Pioneer represents an infinite array of new opportunities and a collective “Yes” to creating the systemic change we all envision, being a force for change.

At MAIA our mission asks us to contemplate: With the right support and example, how far can she go? We often say, “If she can see it, she can be it,” and we ensure that the Girl Pioneers have multiple examples of Indigenous women women who come from the same context as they doleading the way.

As an organization, we nurture and cultivate female talent with intentionality so that our transformative impact ripples beyond the Impact School, creating waves in the broader community, the country, and the world, and setting the stage for systemic change.

Lidia Oxí, creating a rippling effect beyond MAIA

It is with that ethos in mind that we want to share that after seven years at MAIA, Martha Lidia Oxí Chuy, who is currently Co-Executive Director – External Relations, will be leaving to run the first Guatemala-based arm of the organization, World Connect. Lidia has earned this opportunity through her hard work, ambition, and fearless pursuit of change. As a director at World Connect, she will be in charge of allocating funds to grassroots organizations across the Guatemalan Highlands, quite literally creating a rippling impact in Indigenous communities.

We are extremely proud of Lidia for taking on this challenge and continuing to model for the Girl Pioneers the breadth of what is achievable for their futures. While we celebrate Lidia and her bold new trajectory, we are also sad to say goodbye. Luckily, we are thrilled to announce that she has accepted the unanimous vote of the MAIA Board of Directors to join the Board as a director emeritus. Her experience, knowledge, and personal connections will continue to benefit us even as she shifts her professional responsibilities.

With Lidia’s departure from her current position, Andrea Coché, current Co-Executive Director – Direct Services – will become MAIA’s Chief Executive Officer, streamlining the current co-leader structure.

Andrea has been part of MAIA since 2012, and our organization is strong and thriving under her leadership. She has modeled “pioneering” in a multitude of ways during her tenure and welcomes this new opportunity to manage all aspects of the organization. Andrea is ideally suited to this role, our Board of Directors, allies and everyone at MAIA, have complete confidence in her ability to lead us in this next phase of organizational evolution.

This transition for both Lidia and Andrea demonstrates—again and unequivocally—what it is to be a female Indigenous leader and just how far they can go.

Today, October 11th, we join the global celebration of the International Day of the Girl, honoring the potential and vision of girls everywhere. This year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the bold dreams and aspirations that young women are shaping for themselves, their communities, and the world.

At MAIA, we witness the transformational power of education and empowerment firsthand through the Girl Pioneer graduates, who are charting bold new trajectories in higher education, professional careers, and social activism. Their stories demonstrate what can happen when young women are given the tools and opportunities to lead. As we celebrate this day, we are proud to share the inspiring journeys of Azucely, Yesenia, and Ana Miriam, three Maya Kaqchikel young women from Sololá, Guatemala, and Girl Pioneer graduates whose futures are as bright as their visions.

Azucely: A Journey of Advocacy and Empowerment

Azucely has just embarked on an exciting academic journey as a first-year student at the University of Minnesota, thanks to the SHE-CAN scholarship. With aspirations of studying International Relations, Azucely is committed to leveraging her education to advocate for human rights and social justice. Raised in a small community surrounded by nature and rich traditions, she learned early on about the challenges many women face in accessing education. Now, as she navigates her first year at university, Azucely reflects on the weight of her aspirations.

I feel a sense of social responsibility, and while it can be overwhelming, I know I have a purpose that I must pursue. I want to be a voice for change, showing that education is not just a privilege but a right that should be accessible to all women.

Throughout this journey, Azucely recognizes the importance of her support network, which includes educators, mentors, and peers at MAIA, along with family and friends, all of whom have contributed to her academic and professional development. Her journey is not just about personal success; it is a testament to the power of education in creating a more equitable world for future generations. Now, as she embarks on this new chapter, Azucely’s vision for the future is becoming a reality.

Yesenia: A Journey of Growth and Resilience

Yesenia has transformed her journey from feeling uncertain about her future to embracing a path of growth and empowerment. In 2023, she completed her internship at Intercop RL as a management assistant and is currently thriving in the same role.

After graduation, Yesenia felt hesitant and unsure of her next steps. However, the support and unique training she received from MAIA’s staff through the Launch Year program played a pivotal role in her transformation. Through workshops and hands-on experiences, Yesenia gained confidence in her abilities and realized the potential she had to succeed.

But that is not all of her story. Yesenia is also pursuing a degree in business administration, where she applies her skills and fosters critical thinking, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

My goal is to prepare myself professionally to help society and prove that we can achieve our dreams with determination and resilience. Every day, I strive to overcome challenges in my studies and work. I feel grateful for the support of my parents and especially MAIA, which has helped me recognize my abilities through various courses. I aspire to empower more girls to reach their goals just as I have.

Ana Miriam: A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

Ana Miriam has overcome countless challenges with courage and resilience. In 2023, she won a full scholarship through the AFS Exchange Programs and completed her senior year of high school in Ontario, Canada—an opportunity she had dreamed of since she was a little girl.

Though adjusting to life in Canada was challenging due to language barriers, Ana Miriam persevered. She improved her academic performance, shared her Guatemalan culture with classmates, and delivered a speech on The Power of Language, which earned the admiration of her peers.

Today, Ana Miriam is back in Guatemala, working at Cemaco in Quetzaltenango through the Guatemala government’s Beca Mi Primer Empleo (My First Job Scholarship).

I am a woman with a strong desire to care for others and create a more transparent world. I want to motivate the new generations to become agents of change in their communities and countries.

From the MAIA Launch Program to Leader of Tomorrow

According to national statistics, Guatemala is home to 4 million Indigenous women, 48% of whom cannot read or write, and fewer than 20% graduate from secondary school. MAIA Girl Pioneers are changing this reality, leading a transformational shift to break cycles of poverty, discrimination, and injustice through education and empowerment.

We nurture the talent of young women to become a generation of leaders who impact their families, communities, the country, and the world. Our unique empowerment model integrates quality education, socioemotional support, and family involvement.

A key component of this model is the Launch Program, which provides vocational orientation, university preparation, workplace-readiness training, and paid internship experiences. We partner with local, national, and international allies to equip Girl Pioneers with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.

Amelia’s Story

Amelia is a young Maya Kaqchikel woman, a MAIA Girl Pioneer graduate, and is currently in the Launch Program. She faced the possibility of not continuing her studies after primary school. In her community, many young women do not pursue education due to societal pressures and a lack of opportunities. Few have the power to decide their own future.

“I knew many girls hadn’t even studied because they were women,” shares Amelia.

Amelia was shy and reserved, but everything changed when she joined the MAIA Impact School. She broke the cycle and became the first daughter in her family to continue her education and graduate from high school.

With the tools and opportunities provided by the MAIA Impact School, Amelia underwent a significant transformation. She began actively participating inside and outside the classroom, developed critical-thinking skills, and discovered her empowered voice. She learned to be strong and self-confident, which helped her make good decisions and pursue her dream of furthering her education.

Today, Amelia is studying architecture at San Carlos University in Guatemala and has a very clear vision of what her future looks like in five years.

My dreams haven’t changed, but they have evolved and grown as I’ve become more confident. In 5 years, I see myself as a woman with more knowledge and professional skills, in the process of graduating from university. As an architect, I see myself contributing to my community through social projects. I am thrilled that more young women are studying at MAIA, and they motivate me to continue pursuing my dreams as I see myself reflected in them. I wish to inspire many more young women to know the power of their words and voices and be what they dream and decide.

Socioemotional Mentorship and Family Engagement at MAIA

At MAIA, education goes beyond the confines of traditional academics. In a country where 57% of Indigenous girls face early marriage or motherhood before 18, our commitment extends to nurturing the holistic development of every Girl Pioneer who embarks on her bold new trajectory at the MAIA Impact School.

Socioemotional intelligence helps all people thrive personally and academically, develop and maintain positive relationships, become lifelong learners, and contribute to a more caring, just world for all.

The Socioemotional Mentorship and Family Engagement Program is central to MAIA’s educational model. It is a unique initiative designed to empower Indigenous girls to reach their full potential.

Personal Development and Empowerment

MAIA’s dedicated mentors offer both individual and group sessions. In 2023 alone, they provided nearly a thousand hours of socioemotional education covering various topics.

Our mentors provide a safe space for Girl Pioneers to explore their identity and grow—from goal setting to sexual and reproductive health, emotional well-being and leadership skills. Through these sessions, they learn to use their voices confidently and navigate the complexities of their lives.

Building Strong Support Systems

In addition to personal development, building a robust support system is crucial for Girl Pioneers’ success. That’s why our program includes monthly home visits and family engagement activities. By involving families in the educational process, we create a network of support that extends beyond the school walls. Together, we work towards the empowerment of not just the girls, but also their families.

Empowering Indigenous Girls: A Conversation with Silvia Naz

Silvia Naz, the Leadership and Reproductive Health Coordinator, leads weekly vocal empowerment classes and sessions on leadership and reproductive health. She works directly with Girl Pioneers on topics of gender rights and developing safety plans.

Silvia also provides individual mentorship and education sessions for Girl Pioneers who request additional socioemotional and reproductive health support.

Q: Why focus on comprehensive health and leadership topics?
A: I think it’s very important to address topics like comprehensive health and leadership. They are often overlooked, but crucial for navigating daily life.

Q: What challenges do you face when addressing these topics with Girl Pioneers?
A: There are several challenges at each grade level. Generally, topics may not be discussed at home, leading to misinformation due to limited access to information sources. There may also be shyness or limited participation due to cultural norms.

Q: What transformations have you noticed in the Girl Pioneers?
A: The experience with each curriculum has been different. In the Empowered Voice sessions, a young woman expressed losing her fear of speaking in front of an audience. Others have commented on feeling secure in expressing and asserting their ideas. In Comprehensive Sexuality Education, a young woman shared that the topics helped her better understand her body.

Silvia’s insights highlight the transformative impact of our programs. As we look to the future, our mission remains clear: to empower Indigenous girls to unlock and maximize their full potential.

The MAIA and Girl Pioneers’ story

MAIA is not your typical organization. Led by Indigenous women for Indigenous girls, MAIA’s mission is to connect talent with opportunity, maximizing the potential of young women to lead transformational change. We believe that with quality education as their tool against adversity, these bold trailblazers will be reshaping their futures, uplifting their communities, and creating a better world for all of us.

Why Indigenous Girls?

We work in Sololá, one of the poorest regions of Guatemala. Here, most girls are forced to marry or become mothers before they turn 18. Access to education is a privilege. We embarked on this journey with a powerful question driving us: How far could these young women go if they had access to the education they deserve?

We call MAIA’s students Girl Pioneers – because many are the first in their families to continue their education and begin to break cycles of generational poverty.

How do we do it?

We are all about empowering Girl Pioneers to unlock and maximize their full potential!

Our flagship program is the MAIA Impact School, which is changing the game for education in Guatemala. We serve approximately 250 Girl Pioneers in grades 7-11 through a unique educational approach that focuses equally on academics, socio-emotional intelligence, family engagement, culture, vocal empowerment, student well-being, and sexual and reproductive health.

Once they graduate, Girl Pioneers can continue to the Launch Year Program during which they gain access to vocational orientation, university preparation, workplace readiness training, and valuable internship experiences in the formal economy through our network of local allies.

How do we know that it works?

Over the years, we have witnessed significant impact and growth of our model and Girl Pioneers. Our approach is based on evidence, and we invest in professional development to continuously improve and refine our programming.

We have seen firsthand the positive changes that have taken place in the lives of Girl Pioneers, from improvements in academic performance to increased confidence and leadership skills. Girl Pioneers are becoming leaders in their communities, breaking down barriers and taking charge of their futures.

We are delighted to welcome 88 new Girl Pioneers to the MAIA Impact School in 2024. These brave young women hail from 45 rural communities in Guatemala and are the eighth generation of future female leaders. They are ready to ignite a ripple effect that will lead to a better world for all of us!

When I applied to the MAIA Impact School, I was a bit insecure about the schedule, and the school is a bit far from my house. But I was sure that I would receive a quality education. I got so excited that I won the scholarship. My dream is to become a pediatrician and help families with limited resources. I will achieve this with perseverance and determination.
