Congratulations to Starfish graduate, Concepcion “Chonita” Cua. Last week, at the age of 22, Chonita graduated as the valedictorian of her class in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Her widowed mother never attended school; Chonita is the first.
“Losing my fear ” has been Chonita’s biggest challenge over the last three years. As the only daughter of a widowed mother, finances were very difficult for her family. Chonita dropped out of school for three years as a 9th grader because she could not afford to go to school. Chonita found Starfish and lost her fear. She started up again, even becoming a mini mentor to a younger girls group while in high school.
She will start as a full time Starfish mentor in January and will hear back on university scholarships in the next two months. Starfish is so proud of Chonita and all of our students! Thanks to all of the incredible support of the Starfish community for making it possible.
